Thrust ball bearings are kind of separable bearings and available in both single and bi-directional types.

For the single direction thrust ball bearings, they can bear axial load only from the single direction, while for double-direction thrust ball bearings, they can bear axial load from two directions.

However, both of the two kinds of bearings can not bear radial load.
 

Therefore these bearings are unsuitable for high speed operation and their limit speeds are very low. Bearing ring mounted on the shaft are called shaft rings, and those mounted in thehouing are called housing rings.
 

Typical applications: live centers in lathes, automotive clutches, speed reducer, etc.
